Birch

Sunlight catches the curling bark of a birch and turns it luminous, like thin parchment. It is the kind of small event that can disappear into an ordinary day. For Jeff, learning to paint means learning to notice it.

Years of training sharpen the eye, but the decision to stop and look still matters. Birch begins with that attention to papery bark, summer grass, and light arriving at just the right angle. In Jeff's view, a beautiful painting can begin with no more than what is already around us.
