Butter Churns

An old glass butter churn recalls the work of making butter at home. Jeff is drawn to the ingenuity of the glass vessel and its red-handled crank. Its workings are visible, useful, and beautiful in their simplicity.

Butter Churns gives sustained attention to an object easily overlooked. As technology moves ahead, Jeff finds something compelling in a machine whose purpose and operation can still be understood at a glance. The painting grows from that appreciation of a practical tool and the human activity it once served.
