Decoy

A carved spiral rolls like a swell beneath a decoy worn smooth by hands and weather. The bird's form is simple enough to serve its practical purpose, yet Jeff finds beauty in its proportions. Together, the objects bring a small echo of the natural world into a still life.

Decoy also leads him to consider how easily familiarity can dull our attention. A place that overwhelms us at first can become something we scarcely notice a week later. Jeff returns to the choice of looking again, because the beauty has not disappeared when our attention moves elsewhere.
