Hanging Jar

A glass jar hangs from a taut string, still enough to suggest a quiet all its own. Jeff asks us to shift our attention from the object to the light it appears to contain. That change of focus opens a simple arrangement into a question about painting itself.

There is no luminous jar on the canvas, only colored marks placed beside one another. Hard and soft edges, values, and hues create the impression of glass and light on a flat surface. For Jeff, the jar becomes complete in the mind of the person looking.
