Palms

Low palms along a path made Jeff stop where he might otherwise have kept walking. Their leathery fronds moved in the warm breeze, unfamiliar enough to catch a Northerner's attention. Looking closer, he began to see a tapestry of light.

More precisely, he thought of the back of a tapestry, where tangled forms reveal the structure beneath an image. The foliage offered abstract shapes with just enough symmetry to bring them together. Palms grew from that meeting of a passing observation and a composition he could begin to see within it.
