Pheasant

The burst of a pheasant from a field brings copper, emerald, and crimson suddenly into the light. Jeff recalls the anticipation before it, the wet grass, lifting mist, and a dog becoming alert. The bird's colors, patterns, and proportions remain a source of wonder long after the movement has passed.

Pheasant turns that admiration into a question about what beauty adds to life. Jeff sees a bird capable of flight and marvels at the richness that exists beyond that practical need. For him, it offers an example for things people make, an invitation to give useful objects beauty as well as function.
