Washboards

Washboards began with stripes, textures, and the rhythm of parallel lines. The old household tools interested Jeff, but their patterns provided the painting's central idea. He worked with the contrast between materials, strengthening their textures and echoing lines elsewhere in the arrangement.

He compares those repeated elements to a chord, different notes organized into one relationship. Their age remains visible, while the way he composes them follows a contemporary interest in abstraction. Washboards brings that way of seeing to objects once handled in ordinary daily work.
