White Outboard

Jeff is drawn to the deliberate beauty of old utilitarian objects, the proportions and curves that exceed the demands of their function. In White Outboard, he made the motor white to bring those qualities forward. Its familiar machinery becomes a form that light can describe with the clarity he associates with sculpture.

The treatment lets him set aside the usual signals of rust, oil, and patina. What remains is the grace of the design, seen through pale surfaces and the shapes beneath them. White Outboard reflects his appreciation for the care that can make a useful thing beautiful.
