Winter Shadows

In early spring, moving meltwater can run over a layer of ice still lying just beneath the surface. Jeff found a brief and unusual combination there. The shadows of trees rested above their reflections in the water.

Winter Shadows brings those two images into the same small painting. Cool blues meet muddy browns as shadow and reflection overlap. Its subject is the striking arrangement made possible by that moment between frozen water and the spring thaw.
