Young Artist

A young man bends his curly head toward an easel, absorbed in the work before him. The sitter was one of Jeff's students for several years. The studio's familiar scent of linseed oil and turpentine belongs to Jeff's recollection of the scene.

Jeff recognizes in him the eager, romantic image of a young artist ready to take on the world. He describes the painting with affection and a little humor. That particular look, he jokes, is one viewers should not expect to find in his own self-portraits.
